How It Should Fit

The Ghost Max 3 fits true to size in length but runs roomy and generous through the upper — reviewers have literally double-checked whether they grabbed a wider width. That makes it great for wider and higher-volume feet and for orthotics. If you have a narrow or low-volume foot, you may want to size precisely or choose a narrower width so your foot doesn't swim. Fit the foot, not a brand rule.

Thumb's widthLeave about a thumbnail's width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. If your longest toe touches the end, go up a half size.
Play the pianoYour toes should wiggle and splay freely in the roomy toe box. Cramped toes mean size up; a sloppy, swimming forefoot means size down or try a narrower width.
Midfoot hugCinch the laces for a secure midfoot. The upper is plush and roomy, so dialing the lacing helps lock the foot down on that tall stack.
A little heel slip is fineSome heel movement on early steps is normal and not a reason to size down — it usually settles as the shoe breaks in.

Width: available in Medium (D) · Wide (2E) · Extra-Wide (4E). Your foot should sit on the platform, not spill over the sides. If it spills over, go wider — not longer. The generous fit and removable insole also make it easy to drop in an orthotic.

Sock tip: a medium-thickness running sock (like Balega Hidden Comfort) pairs best.

Why this Shoe Works

White Brooks Mens Ghost Max 3 running shoe with black accents and 'Brooks' branding on a light gray background

A huge, protective slab of cushion

The Ghost Max 3 piles on a tall 39 mm stack of DNA Loft v3 — a nitrogen-injected foam that softens hard Arizona pavement and takes a real load off your joints on long days. Brooks softened the foam this version, so it feels plusher underfoot than before while staying stable, not sloppy. It's protective and comfortable rather than springy and fast, and that's exactly the point: this is a shoe built to keep you cushioned, mile after mile and hour after hour.

A roomy, breathable upper

The redesigned double-jacquard mesh upper is soft, breathable, and genuinely roomy — so much so that reviewers double-check whether they grabbed a wider width. A plush tongue and padded heel add to the all-day comfort, and the generous fit leaves room for wider feet, higher volume, or an orthotic. It's the kind of upper you forget you're wearing on a twelve-hour day.

Rolls smooth, stays planted

Two things make the Ghost Max 3 feel so easy underfoot: the GlideRoll rocker and the wide, sidewall-flanked base. The longer forefoot rocker and reworked heel bevel roll you smoothly from landing to toe-off no matter where you touch down, while the broad platform keeps that tall stack from ever feeling tippy. The result is one of the most planted, stable rides you'll find in a neutral shoe — steadying without a medial post or a corrective feel.

Built For How You Move

Maximum protection for easy miles

When your priority is cushion and joint protection over speed, the Ghost Max 3 delivers. That tall DNA Loft v3 stack soaks up the pounding of Arizona asphalt so your easy and long runs feel softer on your legs, and the GlideRoll rocker keeps the ride smooth even when you're tired. It's the shoe for runners who'd rather finish feeling fresh than fast.

The walking and standing champion

There's a reason the Ghost Max 3 keeps landing on best-walking-shoe lists. The wide, stable base and durable outsole make it rock-solid for miles of walking, and the plush, protective foam keeps your feet comfortable through a full shift on hard floors. Nurses, teachers, travelers, and anyone logging big step counts around the West Valley reach for it — and the APMA Seal of Acceptance backs up the comfort.

Cushion for comebacks and recovery

Coming back from a tough stretch, an injury, or just a heavy training block? The Ghost Max 3's deep cushion and steady, planted platform make it a forgiving choice when your legs need a break. It's soft where you need it and stable where it counts, so easy recovery miles and long days on your feet feel a little kinder. Easy does it — and this shoe is built for easy.

Who Is the Brooks Ghost Max 3 For?

The Brooks Ghost Max 3 (men's) is for the runner or walker who wants maximum cushion and a planted, stable platform underfoot. The tall DNA Loft v3 stack and wide, sidewall-flanked base make it one of our most-recommended shoes for easy daily miles, long walks, recovery days, and long hours on hard floors — and it's a 2026 favorite as a walking shoe. The roomy double-jacquard upper and orthotic-friendly fit suit wider feet, higher-volume feet, and anyone who runs an insert, while the steady base gives a reassuring, planted feel for runners who like a little stability without a medial post. It's happiest at easy and moderate paces — heavy and protective rather than light and fast — so if you want max protection that doesn't wobble, this is the one.

Who Should Skip It

We'd rather point you to the right shoe than sell you the wrong one. Skip the Ghost Max 3 if…

You want a lighter, lower everyday shoe

If the Max feels like too much shoe, the Brooks Ghost 17 is lower, lighter, and more run-focused.

You want built-in guidance

The Max's wide base steadies you, but if you want active guidance, the Brooks Glycerin GTS 23 adds GuideRails.

You want speed or race-day pop

At ~10.8 oz with a non-springy foam, it's an easy-pace shoe. For tempo and racing, look at a lighter trainer like the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5.

You want a springier, more responsive ride

DNA Loft v3 is soft but not bouncy. For more energy return, the Brooks Glycerin Max (DNA Tuned) or a supercritical-foam shoe will feel livelier.

You're heading off-road

It's a road shoe. For trails, look at the HOKA Speedgoat 7 or Saucony Peregrine 16.

How it Compares

Black Hoka Bondi 9 running shoe with silver accents on a white background

Brooks Ghost Max 3 vs. HOKA Bondi 9

Both are plush, max-cushion shoes that double as excellent walkers, but they feel different. The Bondi 9 sits taller (43/38 mm, 5 mm drop) on a softer, more premium supercritical-EVA foam with a stronger rocker that rolls you through aggressively. The Ghost Max 3 (39/33 mm, 6 mm drop) runs a touch firmer on DNA Loft v3, with a smoother, milder GlideRoll rocker and an especially wide, sidewall-flanked base that feels planted and stable, plus a roomier, orthotic-friendly fit.
Choose the Bondi 9 for a softer, taller, more rockered ride. Choose the Ghost Max 3 for a firmer, more planted feel and a roomier, orthotic-friendly fit. We carry both.

Black Sauconey Echelon 10 sneaker with brand logo on a white background

Brooks Ghost Max 3 vs. Saucony Echelon 10

Both are stable, orthotic-friendly shoes built for easy running and lots of walking, and they weigh about the same (~10.8 oz). The Echelon 10 sits lower (35/27 mm, 8 mm drop) on a firmer PWRRUN foam, with a straight-lasted broad base, a deep footbed made to hold orthotics, a secure normal-volume fit, and a very durable XT-900 carbon-rubber outsole. The Ghost Max 3 is taller (39/33 mm, 6 mm drop) and softer on DNA Loft v3, with a smoother GlideRoll rocker and a roomier upper.
Choose the Echelon 10 for a firmer, lower, more secure orthotic-ready ride. Choose the Ghost Max 3 for taller, softer cushion and a roomier fit. We carry both.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Brooks Ghost Max 3 a good walking shoe?
Very — it's one of the most-recommended walking shoes of the year, and one of our top picks for it. The tall, soft DNA Loft v3 cushion protects your feet and joints, the wide base keeps you stable and planted over miles of walking, the durable outsole lasts, and it carries the APMA Seal of Acceptance. It's a favorite for big step-count days, travel, and all-day standing.
What's the difference between the Ghost Max 3 and the regular Brooks Ghost 17?
The Ghost Max 3 is the taller, max-cushion version: more stack, a GlideRoll rocker, a wider base, and a heavier, more protective ride aimed at walking, easy miles, and all-day comfort. The standard Ghost 17 sits lower and lighter and feels more like a do-everything daily running shoe. If you want maximum cushion and a planted, stable feel, go Max; if you want something nimbler for running, go Ghost 17.
Is the Ghost Max 3 good for wide feet and orthotics?
Yes — it's one of our easiest recommendations for both. The double-jacquard upper runs roomy and generous, it comes in Medium (D) · Wide (2E) · Extra-Wide (4E), and the insole is removable so you can drop in an orthotic. Keep in mind "wide" is a blanket term — the foot is three-dimensional, with instep height, girth, and arch length all in play — so it's best to have both feet measured in person.
Is the Ghost Max 3 true to size?
Yes for length, but it fits roomy and generous through the upper. Order your normal size and leave about a thumbnail's width past your longest toe. If you have a narrow or low-volume foot, you may want to cinch the laces, size precisely, or choose a narrower width so your foot doesn't swim. A little heel slip on the first few steps is normal.
Does the Ghost Max 3 have a rocker, and is it stable?
Both. Brooks's GlideRoll rocker — a longer forefoot rocker plus a reworked heel bevel — rolls you smoothly from landing to toe-off. And because it has a wide base with foam sidewalls, that tall stack feels planted and steady rather than tippy. It's one of the most stable-feeling neutral shoes out there, which makes it a good pick if you want a secure, steadying ride without a traditional support shoe. How much support you actually need is best sorted in a fit session.
Is the Ghost Max 3 good for running, and at what paces?
Yes for easy and long runs at relaxed paces, and for recovery days — that's its sweet spot. It's a heavy, max-cushion shoe with a soft (not springy) DNA Loft v3 foam, so it's built for comfort and protection, not speed. If you want pop for tempo runs or racing, pair it with a lighter, snappier shoe for those days.
How does the Ghost Max 3 compare to the HOKA Bondi 9?
Both are plush max-cushion shoes that double as great walkers. The Bondi 9 is taller (43/38 mm, 5 mm drop) on a softer, more premium supercritical-EVA foam with a stronger rocker. The Ghost Max 3 (39/33 mm) is a touch firmer on DNA Loft v3, with a smoother, milder rocker, a very wide and stable base, and a roomier, orthotic-friendly fit. Choose the Bondi for a softer, more rockered ride; choose the Ghost Max for a firmer, more planted feel and more room. We carry both.
How does the Ghost Max 3 compare to the Saucony Echelon 10?
Both are stable, orthotic-friendly shoes for easy running and lots of walking, and they weigh about the same. The Echelon 10 sits lower (35/27 mm, 8 mm drop) on a firmer PWRRUN foam, with a straight-lasted broad base, a deep footbed made to hold orthotics, a secure normal-volume fit, and a durable XT-900 carbon-rubber outsole. The Ghost Max 3 is taller (39/33 mm, 6 mm drop) and softer on DNA Loft v3, with a smoother GlideRoll rocker and a roomier upper. Choose the Echelon 10 for a firmer, lower, secure orthotic-ready ride; choose the Ghost Max for taller, softer cushion and more room. We carry both.
How durable is the Ghost Max 3 — how many miles?
Durability is one of its strengths — the generous rubber outsole holds up well. Plan on roughly 300–500+ miles of running, and walkers and all-day wearers usually get many months out of a pair. When the cushion goes flat or the foam packs out, it's time for a new pair.
What's your return policy?
Our "You = Happy" policy gives you 60 days from purchase for a refund, exchange, or store credit. Refunds need the shoes in like-new condition; worn-but-not-worn-out pairs can still earn an exchange or store credit. Receipt or purchase-history lookup required. The Ghost Max 3 isn't carbon-plated, so it's fully returnable (clearance and plated shoes are final sale). Online orders can be mailed back or returned in person in Glendale to skip shipping. Why Our Team Recommends the Brooks Ghost Max 3

TThe Ghost Max 3 is one of our go-to recommendations for anyone who wants maximum cushion with a stable, planted feel — and it's one of the best walking shoes we stock, full stop. We like that the wide base and sidewalls keep that tall stack from feeling tippy, that the GlideRoll rocker smooths out the ride, and that the durable outsole genuinely lasts. It's a favorite for wider feet, orthotic users, all-day-on-their-feet workers, and runners who want protection without a corrective support shoe. It's heavy and it's not fast, and we'll say so — but for soft, stable, all-day comfort, few shoes do it better.
