DNA Hype cushioning. A nitrogen-infused DNA Hype midsole blends PEBA and EVA foams to balance plush softness with springy responsiveness, so every stride feels both protected and propulsive.

How the Brooks Ghost Amp Should Fit

How It Should Fit

Where it should fit snug — and where it shouldn’t

A good fit hugs the midfoot, locks down the heel, and gives your toes room to move — with your foot sitting on top of the platform.

1 2 3
1
Toe box — room to play the piano

You want about a thumbnail’s width between your longest toe and the end, and enough room that your toes can move freely — your toes should be able to “play the piano.”

2
Midfoot — it should hug

The warp-knit upper and semi-gusseted tongue should wrap your midfoot snugly with no pinching across the top. This is a secure, performance-oriented fit built to stay put when you pick up the pace.

3
Heel — locked in

The heel should feel held with minimal slip — lockdown is one of this shoe’s strengths. Use a runner’s (heel-lock) lacing if you want even more hold for faster runs.

Stay on the platform: Your foot should sit on top of the shoe’s platform and not hang off the sides. If your foot spills over the edge, you need a wider option, not a longer size.

How a good fit should feel

Stand up, walk a few steps, and check these before you decide.

Signs it fits

  • A thumbnail’s width between your longest toe and the end
  • Toes move freely — room to “play the piano”
  • Midfoot feels hugged and secure
  • Heel feels locked in with little slip
  • Your foot sits on top of the platform, not over the sides

Signs to size or width-adjust

  • × Longest toe touches the end → go up a full size to start
  • × Pinching across the toes → size up or try Wide
  • × Foot spills over the edge of the platform → you need more width, not length
  • × Heel slips a lot → try heel-lock lacing or a half-size down
  • × Pressure across the top of the foot → you may need more volume

Switching to a 6 mm drop

Coming from the Ghost?

The classic Ghost sits higher in the heel (around 12 mm); the Amp is 6 mm. It feels a little more level and forefoot-focused. Most runners adjust quickly — ease into it over your first few runs if your calves feel it.

Switching brands?

Coming from HOKA, ASICS, Nike, or another brand? Don’t assume a half-size up — fit varies by model and version, so go by how this shoe fits your foot, not a brand rule.

Time of day

Try shoes later in the day when feet are at their largest, and fit to your bigger foot — almost everyone has one.

Choosing your width

The Ghost Amp comes in two men’s widths. [VERIFY exact widths in stock]

Standard
D (medium)

The default. Right for most feet with an average forefoot and instep.

Wide
2E

For wider forefeet or a fuller instep that needs more room across the toes.

Sock tip: Fit the Ghost Amp with the socks you’ll actually run in. A thin-to-midweight performance running sock (like Balega Hidden Comfort) gives the truest fit — thick cotton socks crowd the toe box and trap heat.

Not sure? Get fit in person.

Sizing is easier to feel than to guess — especially with the lower 6 mm drop. Visit us in Glendale and our staff will watch you run, check your fit and width on the actual pair, and make sure the Ghost Amp is right for your stride.

Why this Shoe Works

White Brooks Ghost 18 running shoe with blue sole and Brooks logo on a transparent background

Firm, steady, and built to last

The Ghost 18's DNA Loft v3 midsole is a nitrogen-infused foam that leans firm — protective and well-cushioned without turning soft or mushy. It's not a bouncy, springy race foam, and we won't sell it as one; it's the kind of dependable cushioning that takes a beating, holds its feel for the long haul, and just gets the job done day after day. Paired with the durable RoadTack outsole, this is a shoe that earns its miles.

A classic, traditional ride

While much of the market has gone tall and heavily rockered, the Ghost 18 keeps it old-school: a moderate 36/26 mm stack, a traditional 10 mm drop, and a rounded-but-not-rockered platform with a flexible forefoot. You get a firmly cushioned heel landing, real ground feel, and a natural, predictable transition. The wide base adds a steady, planted feel even though it's a neutral shoe — no gimmicks, just a ride that stays out of your way.

A softer, more comfortable upper

This version's upper is the real upgrade. A refreshed two-color air mesh breathes better, a soft flat-knit pillow tongue wraps the top of the foot and takes pressure off the laces, and extra heel padding plus a plusher sockliner add everyday comfort. The toe box opens up slightly too, so there's a touch more room to splay. It's comfortable from the very first mile, no break-in required.

Built For How You Move

Two people running on a concrete ledge with a cityscape background

A great first running shoe

If you're new to running, the Ghost is one of the first shoes we put on people's feet — and for good reason. It's forgiving, stable, easy to run in at any pace you're comfortable with, and priced sensibly, so you can build a habit without overthinking your gear. Nothing weird underfoot, nothing to get used to; just lace up and go.

The everyday workhorse

Daily, steady, unglamorous miles are exactly what the Ghost 18 was built for. The firm DNA Loft v3 cushioning and traditional ride feel grounded and predictable, so easy runs around Phoenix just click along without anything getting in the way. It's not flashy and it's not trying to be — it's the dependable pair you'll reach for four days a week and trust to hold up.

A longtime walking favorite

The Ghost has quietly been a walking go-to for years, and the 18's plusher tongue and cleaner upper make it even better for it. The firm, durable cushioning and grippy RoadTack outsole hold up to miles of walking and long days on your feet, and it's comfortable enough for errands around Glendale or a full day on hard floors. Run in it, walk in it — it handles both.

Who Is the Brooks Ghost 18 For?

The Brooks Ghost 18 (men's) is the firm, reliable, do-everything neutral daily trainer — and one of the easiest shoes we recommend to new runners. It's built for steady everyday miles, easy long runs, and plenty of walking, with a traditional 10 mm drop and a firm DNA Loft v3 midsole that feels grounded and predictable rather than soft or bouncy. The durable RoadTack outsole means it lasts, and the refreshed, breathable upper with its soft flat-knit tongue makes it comfortable from the first mile. It's not plush and it's not fast, and we'll tell you so — but as a dependable workhorse for daily training, beginners, and walkers, the Ghost earns its reputation. If you want more cushion underfoot, step up to the Glycerin 23; if you want a little guidance, look at the Ghost GTS 18.

Who Should Skip the Brooks Ghost Amp?

Who Should Skip It?

The Ghost Amp is a light, responsive, neutral road trainer — so it’s not the right shoe for everyone. Here’s when we’d point you somewhere else (and we carry the alternatives).

  • You need stability or support. This is a neutral shoe with no guidance. If you overpronate or have been told you need support, ask us about a stability shoe instead.
  • You want maximum, plush cushion. The Ghost Amp is responsive and energetic, not a soft pillow — for the softest, highest-stack ride, look at a max-cushion shoe.
  • You only ever run easy. The pop is the point here; if you never plan to pick up the pace, a more traditional soft daily trainer may suit you better.
  • You want a dedicated carbon race shoe. The Ghost Amp is plateless — for an all-out PR-day shoe, ask about a carbon-plated racer.
  • You’re running trails. This is a road and treadmill shoe; for dirt or technical terrain, ask us about a trail shoe.

Not sure if it’s right for you? Come see us in Glendale and we’ll match you to the right shoe.

How it Compares

Blue New Balance 880
V15 running shoe with white sole on a light gray background

Brooks Ghost 18 vs. New Balance 880v15

Both are dependable neutral daily trainers, but they ride differently. The 880v15 is taller (40.5/34.5 mm) with a lower 6 mm drop and a rockered geometry that rolls you forward, plus a snugger midfoot. The Ghost 18 sits lower (36/26 mm) with a traditional 10 mm drop, a flexible (non-rockered) forefoot, more ground feel, and a slightly roomier toe box.
Choose the 880v15 for a taller, smooth-rolling, rockered ride with a snug hold. Choose the Ghost 18 for a lower, traditional, grounded ride with a roomier fit. We carry both.

White Asics Gel Cumulus 28 running shoe with blue and orange accents on a white background

Brooks Ghost 18 vs. ASICS Gel-Cumulus 28

The two definitive neutral daily trainers, and a classic cross-shop. The Cumulus 28 is lighter (≈9.1 oz) and sits a little taller (38.5/30.5 mm) with an 8 mm drop, and its new FF Blast Max foam and PureGEL heel give it a softer, livelier feel than the Ghost — ASICS even toughened the outsole this version. The Ghost 18 is firmer and more traditional: a lower 36/26 mm stack of durable DNA Loft v3, a higher 10 mm drop, and more ground feel, on Brooks's long-lasting RoadTack rubber.
Choose the Cumulus 28 for a lighter, softer, slightly springier ride. Choose the Ghost 18 for a firmer, grounded, traditional daily workhorse. We carry both.

Brooks Ghost Amp — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ghost Amp good for new and high school runners?

Yes — it’s one of our favorite picks for newer runners and high school or college athletes. It’s comfortable and forgiving enough for everyday miles, but has enough pop to handle faster days, so one pair covers most of what a young runner needs.

Is the Ghost Amp a neutral or stability shoe?

It’s a neutral shoe — no built-in support posts or guidance. If you overpronate or have been told you need stability, ask us about a support shoe instead. Come see us in Glendale and we’ll check your gait and point you to the right one.

Is it good for cross country and track training?

It’s a strong daily and workout trainer for road and track sessions — great for team miles, strides, and tempo work, and light enough to pick up the pace. It’s a road trainer, though, not a spike or a cross-country racing flat, and it’s not built for dirt or technical trails.

Does the Ghost Amp have a carbon plate? Can I race in it?

No plate. The pop comes from the DNA Hype foam and the SpringRamp forefoot geometry, not a carbon plate. You can absolutely race in it — it’s a great 5K, 10K, and half-marathon option — but it’s a versatile trainer that can race, not a dedicated super shoe.

Bonus: because it has no plate, it’s covered by our standard return policy (carbon-plated race shoes are final sale; this one isn’t).

How is the 6 mm drop different from the regular Brooks Ghost?

The classic Ghost has a higher heel drop (around 12 mm); the Ghost Amp drops to 6 mm, so it sits more level and feels a little more forefoot-focused and modern. If you’re coming from a high-drop Ghost, the change is noticeable but easy to adjust to for most runners — ease into it over your first few runs.

Is the Ghost Amp good for wide feet?

It comes in Standard and Wide options. Fit by the platform: your foot should sit on top of the footbed, not spill over the sides — if it does, go wider rather than longer. [VERIFY exact widths in stock]

Does the Ghost Amp run true to size?

For most people, yes — but fit is personal, so go by your foot, not a rule. You want about a thumbnail’s width between your longest toe and the end, toes free to move, and a midfoot that feels hugged. If your longest toe touches the end, go up a full size to start, or come in and we’ll dial it in on the actual pair.

How breathable is it in the heat?

The warp-knit spacer upper is built for airflow and breathes well for a structured, locked-down upper — but it’s built for security too, so it’s warmer than an ultra-thin summer mesh. For Phoenix summers it’s a solid early-morning, shaded, or treadmill option. Want the airiest thing we carry for midday heat? Just ask.

What’s your return policy?

We want you to love what you run in — that’s the whole idea behind our “You = Happy” Return Policy. You have 60 days from your purchase date to return your shoes for a refund, exchange, or store credit.

  • To be eligible for a refund, shoes must be returned in like-new condition.
  • Changed your mind after a few runs? As long as they aren’t worn out, we can still help with an exchange or store credit.
  • A receipt is required — lost it? If you have a customer profile with us, we can look up your purchase history.
  • Card refunds go back to the same card used for the original purchase.
  • Online orders can be mailed back (return shipping is the customer’s responsibility) or returned in-store in Glendale to skip shipping.
  • Clearance items and plated (carbon-plate) shoes are final sale.

Why Our Team Recommends the Brooks Ghost 18

The Ghost 18 is one of the most reliable recommendations we make, full stop. We like that it doesn't try to be trendy — the firm DNA Loft v3 and traditional ride are predictable and easy to run in, the wide base keeps it steady, and the RoadTack outsole lasts and lasts.

It's our default suggestion for new runners, a dependable workhorse for veterans who just want to log honest miles, and a longtime favorite of walkers. It's firm rather than plush and it's not built for speed, and we'll always tell you that up front — but for a do-everything daily trainer that won't let you down, the Ghost has earned its name.
