The do-everything daily trainer, refined for real miles. The Men's Brooks Ghost 18 brings back the soft-and-smooth ride runners trust — now with a more breathable triple-jacquard mesh upper, a pillowy flat-knit tongue, and an upgraded Ortholite X-60 sockliner that makes the step-in feel unmistakably softer. Nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 cushioning. Balanced 10mm drop. Available in four widths. Fit-checked and runner-approved by the team at Tortoise & Hare Sports.

Why Men Keep Coming Back to the Ghost

There's a reason the Brooks Ghost has been the #1 daily trainer at our shop for over a decade. It just works. It doesn't chase trends, it doesn't try to be a super shoe, and it doesn't punish you for running easy. The Ghost 18 doubles down on everything that made the 17 a runaway favorite — and fixes the two things our Glendale fit experts heard about most: a slightly tight toe box and a tongue that could shift on long runs.

This year, Brooks left the celebrated DNA LOFT v3 midsole and 10mm drop alone (smart move — runners loved last year's ride) and put all their attention up top. The result is a shoe that feels the same on the road but feels noticeably better on your foot from mile zero.

What's Actually New
  • Triple-jacquard engineered air mesh upper — More breathable, faster-drying, and more accommodating than the Ghost 17. Phoenix and Glendale runners, this one's for you: we've already tested these in 100°+ heat and the airflow is a real, measurable upgrade.
  • Soft flat-knit tongue with pillowy padding — Sock-like, no pressure points, no slipping mid-run. One of the most-requested upgrades for the franchise, finally delivered.
  • Ortholite X-60 sockliner — A premium step-in feel that's softer and more contoured than previous Ghost sockliners. Removable if you wear custom orthotics or our store-fit Currex insoles.
  • Slightly roomier toe box — Subtle, but real. If the Ghost 17 felt a touch tapered for your forefoot, the 18 will feel like a relief.
  • Refreshed two-color mesh styling — New colorways with better contrast and more wearable everyday looks.
Reliable Miles, No Drama
  • Nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 midsole — Brooks' large-cell, gas-foamed cushioning. Lighter and softer than traditional EVA, with a balanced rebound that handles easy miles, recovery shuffles, and the occasional pickup without feeling mushy.
  • RoadTack rubber outsole — One of the most durable rubber compounds in the daily-trainer category. Most of our customers get 400–500 miles before the outsole tells them it's time.
  • Segmented heel-to-toe transition — Smooth, predictable, and quiet. The Ghost earned its name honestly.
  • Reflective heel detail — A small but appreciated touch for early-morning Arizona Canal runs and post-sunset Thunderbird Park loops.
Who the Ghost 18 Is Built For

The Ghost 18 is the Swiss Army knife of the men's running shoe world. We confidently fit it on:

  • First-time runners building a base who want one shoe that handles everything
  • Daily-mileage runners logging 20–40 miles a week of mostly easy paces
  • Walkers and all-day-on-feet professionals — nurses, teachers, tradespeople, retail staff (the APMA Seal of Acceptance is on this franchise for a reason)
  • Marathon trainees looking for a reliable easy-day and recovery-day shoe to rotate with a faster trainer
  • Treadmill runners who want cushion without the sluggish feel of a max-stack shoe
  • Neutral runners and mild overpronators — the dynamic forefoot and secure heel deliver inherent stability without forcing your foot into a corrected position
  • Heavier runners — the firmer DNA LOFT v3 platform holds up well for runners over 180 lbs who need cushion without bottoming out

If you're a moderate-to-severe overpronator, ask us about the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 instead — same family, more guidance.

Tortoise & Hare's Honest Take

We've fit hundreds of runners in the Ghost line over the years. Here's the unfiltered truth from our fit floor:

You'll love the Ghost 18 if: You want a do-it-all trainer that disappears on your foot, you're loyal to the Ghost franchise, you have a neutral-to-mildly-pronated gait, or you want one shoe to handle running and walking and errands without compromise.

Look elsewhere if: You want a fast, propulsive shoe for tempo and race day (try the Hyperion Max 3 or Glycerin Flex), you need maximum stack-height plushness (try the Ghost Max 3 or Glycerin 23), or you want a carbon-plated trainer (the Ghost is intentionally plate-free and that's a feature, not a flaw).

Sizing & Fit Notes from Our Fit Floor

The Ghost 18 fits true to size for most men — but the slightly roomier toe box means if you sized up a half-size in the Ghost 17, you may be able to come back to your true size in the 18. Half-sizes available 7–13; whole sizes 14, 15. If you're between sizes, we recommend going up a half-size (especially for runs over 6 miles, when feet swell). The three-width range means we can fit the vast majority of feet that walk through our doors — bring us your hardest-to-fit foot, we love a challenge.

Care & Mileage

Most runners get 300–500 miles out of a Ghost 18. Rotate with a second pair if you're running 25+ miles/week — the foam recovers better with a 24-hour rest. Hand wash with cold water and mild soap; air dry away from direct heat. Never put running shoes in the dryer (heat breaks down the DNA LOFT foam).

Why Buy From Tortoise & Hare Sports

When you buy a Ghost 18 from us, you're not just getting a shoe in a box. You're getting:

  • ✅ A free 5-Point Fit Process in-store (or video fit consultation if you're remote)
  • 30-day wear-test guarantee — run in them, walk in them, treadmill them. If they're not right, bring them back.
  • Lifetime fit support from the same team year after year
  • Local Glendale, AZ ownership — every dollar stays in the Valley
  • ✅ Free shipping on qualifying orders + free in-store pickup
  • Tortoise & Hare Squad rewards on every purchase

Run, walk, or stroll your way in. We'll handle the rest. #AtAnyPace

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the Ghost 18 good for walking?
A: Yes — it's one of the most popular all-day walking shoes we sell. The DNA LOFT v3 cushioning, APMA Seal of Acceptance, and balanced 10mm drop make it ideal for nurses, teachers, travelers, tradespeople, and anyone on their feet for long stretches.

Q: How does the Ghost 18 compare to the Ghost 17?
A: The midsole, drop, weight, and outsole are essentially unchanged. The upper, tongue, and sockliner are all upgraded — more breathable mesh, plusher tongue, softer step-in feel, and a slightly roomier toe box.

Q: Is the Ghost 18 good for plantar fasciitis?
A: It can help — the 10mm drop reduces strain on the plantar fascia, and the DNA LOFT v3 absorbs impact well. For more severe cases, we often pair it with a custom or store-fit Currex insole. Come in for a 5-Point Fit and we'll match the right combination.

Q: Does the Ghost 18 come in wide widths?
A: Yes — Medium (D), Wide (2E), and Extra Wide (4E). One of the widest fit ranges in the daily-trainer category for men.

Q: Can I run a marathon in the Ghost 18?
A: Absolutely. It's not a "fast" shoe, but it's a reliable workhorse for marathon training and a comfortable race-day option for first-timers and runners prioritizing comfort over PRs.

Q: How many miles will the Ghost 18 last?
A: Most runners get 300–500 miles. Rotate with a second pair to extend foam life.

Q: Is the Ghost 18 stable enough for mild overpronation?
A: Yes — the secure heel and dynamic forefoot deliver "balanced support" that helps mild overpronators. For moderate-to-severe overpronation, ask us about the Adrenaline GTS 25.

Q: I'm a heavier runner (200+ lbs). Will the Ghost 18 hold up?
A: Yes — the firmer-side-of-balanced DNA LOFT v3 platform is one of the better daily trainers for heavier runners. If you want even more cushion and protection, look at the Ghost Max 3 or Glycerin 23.

How It Should Fit

The Ghost 18 fits true to size, and this version opens up the toe box a touch for a little more room to splay. It runs on the lower-volume side, though — if you have a high-volume or high-instep foot, you may want to size up a half or choose a wider width. Fit the foot, not a brand rule.

Thumb's widthLeave about a thumbnail's width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. If your longest toe touches the end, go up a half size.
Play the pianoYour toes should wiggle and splay freely. Cramped toes mean size up; a sloppy, swimming forefoot means size down or try a narrower width.
Midfoot hugThe soft flat-knit tongue wraps the top of the foot and takes pressure off the laces — cinch them for a secure, locked-in midfoot.
A little heel slip is fineSome heel movement on early steps is normal and not a reason to size down — it usually settles as the shoe breaks in.

Width: available in Narrow (B) · Medium (D) · Wide (2E) · Extra-Wide (4E). Your foot should sit on the platform, not spill over the sides. If it spills over, go wider — not longer. The removable insole also leaves room to drop in an orthotic.

Sock tip: a medium-thickness running sock (like Balega Hidden Comfort) pairs best.

Not sure on size or width? Come get a free fit session at our Glendale shop. We'll measure both feet, watch you move, and dial it in before you commit.

Why this Shoe Works

White Brooks Ghost 18 running shoe with blue sole and Brooks logo on a transparent background

Firm, steady, and built to last

The Ghost 18's DNA Loft v3 midsole is a nitrogen-infused foam that leans firm — protective and well-cushioned without turning soft or mushy. It's not a bouncy, springy race foam, and we won't sell it as one; it's the kind of dependable cushioning that takes a beating, holds its feel for the long haul, and just gets the job done day after day. Paired with the durable RoadTack outsole, this is a shoe that earns its miles.

A classic, traditional ride

While much of the market has gone tall and heavily rockered, the Ghost 18 keeps it old-school: a moderate 36/26 mm stack, a traditional 10 mm drop, and a rounded-but-not-rockered platform with a flexible forefoot. You get a firmly cushioned heel landing, real ground feel, and a natural, predictable transition. The wide base adds a steady, planted feel even though it's a neutral shoe — no gimmicks, just a ride that stays out of your way.

A softer, more comfortable upper

This version's upper is the real upgrade. A refreshed two-color air mesh breathes better, a soft flat-knit pillow tongue wraps the top of the foot and takes pressure off the laces, and extra heel padding plus a plusher sockliner add everyday comfort. The toe box opens up slightly too, so there's a touch more room to splay. It's comfortable from the very first mile, no break-in required.

Built For How You Move

A great first running shoe

If you're new to running, the Ghost is one of the first shoes we put on people's feet — and for good reason. It's forgiving, stable, easy to run in at any pace you're comfortable with, and priced sensibly, so you can build a habit without overthinking your gear. Nothing weird underfoot, nothing to get used to; just lace up and go.

The everyday workhorse

Daily, steady, unglamorous miles are exactly what the Ghost 18 was built for. The firm DNA Loft v3 cushioning and traditional ride feel grounded and predictable, so easy runs around Phoenix just click along without anything getting in the way. It's not flashy and it's not trying to be — it's the dependable pair you'll reach for four days a week and trust to hold up.

A longtime walking favorite

The Ghost has quietly been a walking go-to for years, and the 18's plusher tongue and cleaner upper make it even better for it. The firm, durable cushioning and grippy RoadTack outsole hold up to miles of walking and long days on your feet, and it's comfortable enough for errands around Glendale or a full day on hard floors. Run in it, walk in it — it handles both.

Who Is the Brooks Ghost 18 For?

The Brooks Ghost 18 (men's) is the firm, reliable, do-everything neutral daily trainer — and one of the easiest shoes we recommend to new runners. It's built for steady everyday miles, easy long runs, and plenty of walking, with a traditional 10 mm drop and a firm DNA Loft v3 midsole that feels grounded and predictable rather than soft or bouncy. The durable RoadTack outsole means it lasts, and the refreshed, breathable upper with its soft flat-knit tongue makes it comfortable from the first mile. It's not plush and it's not fast, and we'll tell you so — but as a dependable workhorse for daily training, beginners, and walkers, the Ghost earns its reputation. If you want more cushion underfoot, step up to the Glycerin 23; if you want a little guidance, look at the Ghost GTS 18.

Who Should Skip It

You want a softer, plusher ride

The Ghost runs firm. For more cushion underfoot, step up to the Brooks Glycerin 23.

You want maximum cushion or the best walker

For a taller, max-cushion ride and a top-tier walking shoe, look at the Brooks Ghost Max 3.

You want built-in guidance

The Ghost is neutral. If your stride needs a little steering, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 is this shoe with GuideRails added.

How it Compares

Blue New Balance 880
V15 running shoe with white sole on a light gray background

Brooks Ghost 18 vs. New Balance 880v15

Both are dependable neutral daily trainers, but they ride differently. The 880v15 is taller (40.5/34.5 mm) with a lower 6 mm drop and a rockered geometry that rolls you forward, plus a snugger midfoot. The Ghost 18 sits lower (36/26 mm) with a traditional 10 mm drop, a flexible (non-rockered) forefoot, more ground feel, and a slightly roomier toe box.
Choose the 880v15 for a taller, smooth-rolling, rockered ride with a snug hold. Choose the Ghost 18 for a lower, traditional, grounded ride with a roomier fit. We carry both.

White Asics Gel Cumulus 28 running shoe with blue and orange accents on a white background

Brooks Ghost 18 vs. ASICS Gel-Cumulus 28

The two definitive neutral daily trainers, and a classic cross-shop. The Cumulus 28 is lighter (≈9.1 oz) and sits a little taller (38.5/30.5 mm) with an 8 mm drop, and its new FF Blast Max foam and PureGEL heel give it a softer, livelier feel than the Ghost — ASICS even toughened the outsole this version. The Ghost 18 is firmer and more traditional: a lower 36/26 mm stack of durable DNA Loft v3, a higher 10 mm drop, and more ground feel, on Brooks's long-lasting RoadTack rubber.
Choose the Cumulus 28 for a lighter, softer, slightly springier ride. Choose the Ghost 18 for a firmer, grounded, traditional daily workhorse. We carry both.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Brooks Ghost 18 a good beginner running shoe?
It's one of the first shoes we hand to new runners. It's forgiving, stable, easy to run in at any comfortable pace, durable, and sensibly priced — there's nothing strange underfoot to get used to. If you're building a running habit and want a dependable, do-everything pair, the Ghost is a safe, smart starting point.
What's the difference between the Ghost 18 and the Glycerin 23?
Cushion and feel. The Glycerin 23 is the plusher, softer, more premium daily trainer with more foam underfoot. The Ghost 18 is firmer, lower, more traditional, and more affordable — a grounded workhorse rather than a soft cruiser. If you love the Ghost but want more cushion, the Glycerin is the natural step up.
What's the difference between the Ghost 18 and the Ghost Max 3?
The Ghost Max 3 is the taller, max-cushion, rockered version — softer underfoot and a top-tier walking shoe. The Ghost 18 sits lower and firmer with a traditional, flexible ride that's more run-focused. Want maximum cushion and a smooth roll? Go Max. Want a classic daily trainer? Go Ghost 18.
Is the Ghost 18 good for overpronation, or does it have guidance?
The Ghost 18 is a neutral shoe — it doesn't steer your stride, though its wide base does add a steady, planted feel. If you want built-in guidance, the Brooks Ghost GTS 18 is this exact shoe with GuideRails added, and the Adrenaline GTS is another structured option. The best way to know what you need is a quick gait check in the shop.
Is the Ghost 18 good for walking and standing all day?
Yes — the Ghost has been a walker favorite for years, and this version's plusher tongue and cleaner upper make it even better for it. The firm, durable cushioning and grippy RoadTack outsole hold up to lots of walking and long days on your feet. Pairing it with a supportive insole is a nice upgrade for full shifts on hard floors.
Is the Ghost 18 true to size, and is it good for wide feet?
It fits true to size, and this version's toe box opens up a little. It does run on the lower-volume side, though, so high-volume or high-instep feet may want to size up a half or choose a wider width. It comes in Narrow (B) · Medium (D) · Wide (2E) · Extra-Wide (4E), and the removable insole leaves room for an orthotic. Since "wide" covers instep height, girth, and arch length too, it's best to have both feet measured in person.
Can I use the Ghost 18 for speed or tempo workouts?
It's not built for it. The firm DNA Loft v3 foam is protective and durable but not springy or propulsive, so the Ghost is happiest at easy and steady daily paces and long runs. If you want a shoe with pop for tempo days and racing, pair it with a lighter, livelier shoe like the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5.
How does the Ghost 18 compare to the ASICS Gel-Cumulus 28?
They're the two classic neutral daily trainers. The Cumulus 28 is lighter (≈9.1 oz) and sits a bit taller with an 8 mm drop, and its new FF Blast Max foam and PureGEL heel give it a softer, slightly springier feel. The Ghost 18 is firmer and more traditional, with a higher 10 mm drop, more ground feel, and Brooks's durable RoadTack outsole. Choose the Cumulus for a lighter, softer, livelier ride; choose the Ghost for a firmer, grounded workhorse. We carry both.
How durable is the Ghost 18 — how many miles?
Durability is a Brooks strong suit, and the RoadTack outsole holds up well. Plan on roughly 400–500 miles of running before the cushion starts to flatten, and walkers usually get many months out of a pair. When the foam packs out or the ride feels dead, it's time for a fresh pair.
What's your return policy?
Our "You = Happy" policy gives you 60 days from purchase for a refund, exchange, or store credit. Refunds need the shoes in like-new condition; worn-but-not-worn-out pairs can still earn an exchange or store credit. Receipt or purchase-history lookup required. The Ghost 18 isn't carbon-plated, so it's fully returnable (clearance and plated shoes are final sale). Online orders can be mailed back or returned in person in Glendale to skip shipping. Why Our Team Recommends the Brooks Ghost 18

The Ghost 18 is one of the most reliable recommendations we make, full stop. We like that it doesn't try to be trendy — the firm DNA Loft v3 and traditional ride are predictable and easy to run in, the wide base keeps it steady, and the RoadTack outsole lasts and lasts.

It's our default suggestion for new runners, a dependable workhorse for veterans who just want to log honest miles, and a longtime favorite of walkers. It's firm rather than plush and it's not built for speed, and we'll always tell you that up front — but for a do-everything daily trainer that won't let you down, the Ghost has earned its name.
