Why we're hosting it

We talk with runners and walkers every day, and safety comes up more than you'd think. One customer only runs with her phone in her hand. Another wants to know which trails are busy enough to go alone. Someone else had a scary moment in a parking lot and hasn't been out at dawn since.

Those conversations stayed with us. So we invited the people who handle this for a living to come teach, in a place that already feels like home for a lot of you. You'll leave with a few habits and a couple of moves you'll actually remember, and probably a new running buddy or two.

Meet the speakers

Each speaker covers a different piece: knowing what's actually happening locally, noticing trouble early, and knowing what to do if it reaches you.

01

Real cases & the numbers

Officer Alex Sachs

Scottsdale Police Department

Real cases from around the Valley and the numbers behind them. Officer Sachs will share what officers see most often and the small habits that keep you, your family and your belongings from becoming a target.

02

Situational awareness

Cory Krebs

General Manager, United Defense Tactical

The skill that keeps a bad moment from happening at all. Learn how to read a trailhead, a parking lot or a gas station, and how to trust the feeling that something's off.

03

Self-defense in the moment

Professor Erika

Gracie Barra Peoria Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

A short, hands-on lesson in simple self-defense moves you can use in the moment. No experience needed. Join in or just watch, whichever feels right.

04

Welcome & the why

Bree O'Connell

General Manager, Tortoise & Hare Sports

Bree opens the summit. She'll thank the vendors who helped make the morning happen and share why we wanted to bring everyone together.

Questions

Is the Women's Safety Summit really free?+

Yes. The run/walk, the talks and the food are on us. Signing up just tells us how much food to order.

How do I sign up?+

Register free on Eventbrite. It takes about a minute. Register each person coming, including friends and kids, since space is limited to 100.

I'm not a runner. Can I still come?+

Absolutely. Do the 1-mile walk, or skip it and come around 8:15 for the talks. Plenty of people will do exactly that.

What time should I get there?+

Doors open at 7:00 and we head out at 7:30. If you're just coming for the talks, aim for 8:15 so you can grab a bite before we start at 8:30.

Can I bring my daughter or a friend?+

Please do, and register them too. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to sign the waiver and stay with them. Kids under 13 can do the walk but will sit out the hands-on self-defense part.

Is it only for women?+

We built it with women in mind, but anyone who wants to learn is welcome.

Do I have to do the self-defense part?+

No. It's hands-on for anyone who wants to try, and you're welcome to just watch.

Is there a waiver?+

Yes. You'll agree to it with a checkbox when you register. If you didn't, come 10 minutes early to sign a paper copy.

Where do I park?+

Right out front in the Shops at Arrowhead Gateway lot, at 17570 N. 75th Ave in Glendale.

What if I can't make it after I sign up?+

No problem. Cancel through Eventbrite a day or two ahead so someone else can take your spot, and so we don't order food that goes to waste.

Anything else? Call us at 623-792-7900 or email info@tortoiseandharesports.com. See what else is coming up on our events page.

See you November 7.

Bring a friend. Come as you are. #EmbraceYourPace
